How Fabricators Measure Countertops

Stone fabricators and kitchen remodelers measure countertops along the back wall for each section. Here's what they include in the linear footage:

  1. Main runs: Measure the full length of each countertop run along the back wall, including the space over dishwashers and trash pull-outs.
  2. Islands and peninsulas: Each is a separate section. The length is the long side of the island.
  3. Overhangs: Standard 1.5-inch overhang is baked into the 25.5-inch depth. Bar overhangs (12-18 inches) are typically priced separately or as an upgrade.
  4. Seams: Stone slabs max out at about 120-130 inches (10-11 feet). Sections longer than this will require a seam. Fabricators add 10% for seam matching and waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do fabricators measure countertops in linear feet?
Fabricators measure along the back wall for each section of countertop, including the length of any islands or peninsulas. Overhangs for bar seating are measured separately. The total is the sum of all section lengths. Most shops add 10% for waste.
What is the standard countertop depth?
Standard base cabinet depth is 24 inches, giving a countertop depth of 25.5 inches (including the 1.5-inch overhang). This is why countertops are priced by linear foot — the depth is standard. Bar tops and islands may be deeper (36-42 inches).
How much do countertops cost per linear foot installed?
Based on 2026 contractor data: laminate $30-60/LF, granite $80-175/LF, quartz $90-200/LF, marble $100-250/LF, butcher block $40-90/LF, solid surface (Corian) $50-100/LF. These include templating, fabrication, and installation.
Do inside corners count in linear foot measurements?
Yes. Fabricators measure along the wall path including corners. An L-shaped countertop is measured as the sum of both legs. Inside corners do not reduce the linear footage — the stone must span the full length.
