Concrete Linear Foot Formulas

Perimeter LF (footings, stem walls):
LF = (2 × Length) + (2 × Width) + Interior Walls
Straight Run LF (sidewalk, curb, driveway edge):
LF = Run Length
Cubic Yards from LF:
CY = (LF × Cross-Section Width in ft × Thickness in ft) / 27

Common Concrete Elements by Linear Foot

Element Typical Thickness Typical Width CY per 100 LF
Residential Footing8-12"12-16"3.7-5.6
Stem Wall8"6-8"1.5-2.0
Sidewalk (4 ft wide)4"48"4.9
Curb6-8"6"0.9-1.2
Retaining Wall (4 ft)8-10"48"9.9-12.3

Always order 10% extra concrete. Short loads cost more in delivery fees than the extra yard of concrete.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many linear feet of concrete per cubic yard?
It depends on the cross-section dimensions. For a 4-inch thick, 4-foot wide sidewalk: LF = 27 / (4 × 0.333) = 20.3 linear feet per cubic yard. For a 12-inch wide, 18-inch deep footing: LF = 27 / (1 × 1.5) = 18 linear feet per cubic yard.
How do I calculate concrete footing linear feet?
Footing linear feet = the total perimeter of the structure plus any interior bearing walls. For a 40×30-foot house: (2 × 40) + (2 × 30) = 140 LF of exterior footing. Add interior load-bearing wall footings separately. For stem walls, the footing width is typically twice the wall width.
How many linear feet of rebar per footing?
Footings typically need two parallel runs of rebar (#4 or #5). For 140 linear feet of footing: 2 × 140 = 280 LF of rebar. Add 20% for overlaps (each overlap = 40 bar diameters). Vertical dowels connecting footing to wall add additional LF.
What is the difference between linear feet and cubic yards in concrete?
Linear feet measures the length of a concrete element (footing, curb, wall). Cubic yards measures volume. To convert: Cubic Yards = (LF × width in ft × depth in ft) / 27. One cubic yard fills about 20 linear feet of a 4-inch thick, 4-foot wide sidewalk.
